Stage 1
General Instructions
- Make sure that you have the required font installed on your computer
- We recommend that you use LibreOffice Writer to type your script
- Watch the video Typing in local languages in the LibreOffice Writer series on our website to know how to type in various Indian languages
- In LibreOffice Writer, the script should be typed in wiki-markup so that you can directly copy and paste it later
- To see a sample wiki-markup script, please visit English-Timed-script and do the following -
- Login to script-wiki, since you have an account there
- Click on the edit tab
- Now copy and paste the wiki-markup to your document in LibreOffice Writer
- Type your translated sentences in the Narration column part, as shown in the sample that you copied
Translation Instructions
- Watch the original English video, at least once, to understand the context of the script that you have to translate
- Use the English Timed-script of the selected topic
- Translate the script sentence by sentence in such a way that the meaning of the original tutorial is maintained
- Take enough care to see that each sentence when translated, takes same or lesser time to read out, than the original sentence
- In some cases, you may merge 2 sentences in the translation so as to match the timing of the original 2 sentences
- Use simple and precise words while translating
- All words that are in bold-face in the English Timed-Script should be retained in English itself. Do not translate these words. Just transliterate them.
- Retain common words like window, mouse, cursor, space, Enter key, etc. in English. However, in the translated script, the English words should be transliterated.
- For eg-
- In Hindi ऑनलाइन (online), इनपुट (input), कमांड (command)
- In Gujarati ઑનલાઇન (online), ઇનપુટ (input), કમાંડ (command)
- In Tamil ஆன்லைன் (online), இன்புட் (input), கமாண்ட் (command)
- For eg-
- Read out the entire translated script and confirm the timing of each sentence again
- Review the translated script against the Dubbers' Checklist and make the required modifications

Stage 2
Dubbing Instructions
- Before dubbing, go through the tutorial on "How to use Audacity and ffmpeg" on our website. This is available under the FOSS category Spoken Tutorial Technology
- Once again follow all the tips given in Guidelines on Narration
- View the original tutorial
- Make a note of the begin time of each sentence in the original
- Record the script sentence by sentence giving an appropriate pause between sentences
- Finish the entire recording in one go
- Now split the audio at the noted time intervals (step 4)
- Starting from the last one, slide the audio clip to sync with the corresponding video/activity on the screen.
For more details, please watch "How to use Audacity and ffmpeg" - Do this till all the audio clips are placed at the noted time intervals
- Play the whole movie back and confirm that the dubbed audio and video are in sync
- Save the movie as per the instructions given in "How to use Audacity and ffmpeg"
- Review the resultant movie against the Dubbers' Checklist and make the required modifications
- Intimate your IITB Team Leader on completion of this stage or write to [administrator@spoken-tutorial.org]. Here is what we will check
Conversion Instructions
Step 1
- We recommend that you dub/record using Audacity
- (It is available for all OS : Linux Distributions, Windows [all versions] and also for Mac OSX)
- After you record in Audacity -
- Click on File -> Export -> save as *.mp3
- This will export the final audio as an "*.mp3" file
- If you are using Movie Maker -
- Convert the output file as an "*.mp3" using Any Video Convertor (Free Version)
Step 2
- Now download the original ".mov" English video from this link http://spoken-tutorial.org/english-videos
- Place the dubbed audio file (.mp3 format) and the downloaded English video file (.mov format) in the same folder
- Please Note - You have to use FFmpeg Command Line for the following process
- So ensure that it is installed on your machine
- Do the following in a Linux machine -
- Open the Terminal and go to the folder using cd command
- For e.g. cd Desktop/linux
- Here linux is the folder in which I have saved the audio and video files for conversion
- In my case, the file names are :
- English Video : linux-basic-of-syatem-admin-english.mov
- Dubbed Audio : linux-basic-of-syatem-admin-tamil-dubbed.mp3
Step 3
- First : Remove the English audio from the downloaded English mov video
- To do so, type the command :
- ffmpeg -i linux-basic-of-syatem-admin-english.mov -an -vcodec copy linux-basic-of-system-admin-english-video-without-audio.mov
- This command will remove the audio from the input video (linux-basic-of-syatem-admin-english.mov) and
- save the output video (linux-basic-of-system-admin-english-video-without-audio.mov) in mov format itself
- Second : Merge the dubbed audio with the English video without audio
- Type the command :
- ffmpeg -i linux-basic-of-system-admin-english-video-without-audio.mov -i linux-basic-of-syatem-admin-tamil-dubbed.mp3 -vcodec copy -acodec copy linux-basic-of-system-admin-tamil.mov
- This command will merge the dubbed audio (in .mp3 format) with the English video with out audio (in .mov format) and
- save the output in .mov format (linux-basic-of-system-admin-tamil.mov)
Step 4
- Convert the dubbed mov file into ogv video
- We have the dubbed video in .mov format with the same quality like the original English video
- But we need it in .ogv format
- To convert mov into an ogv video, use "[| ffmpeg]" or any other online video convertor tool.
So finally we will get the dubbed video in OGV format in GOOD QUALITY with LESSER FILE SIZE
